"THE CHURCH NEEDS SAINTS - NOT REFORMERS..." Bishop Rifan, 11/19/05

The Northeastern Regional Conference was sponsored by ten chapters of UVA: UV Berkshires, Boston, Brooklyn, Bronx, Cape Cod, New Jersey, Rhode Island, Rochester, Syracuse, and Westchester. These ten chapters also bought His Excellency Bp. Rifan a new pontifical ring which was presented to him by Fr. Santos at vespers on Friday.

The conference weekend was a truly a blessed experience for all who attended. The speakers gave insightful and inspiring talks, and all of the liturgies were incredibly beautiful, including the pontifical High Mass, which was celebrated from the throne with the permission of Bishop Tobin of Providence. The weekend would not have been possible without the kind permission of Father Santos of Holy Name of Jesus Church, who opened his church and school for the events. A special "thank you" is extended with much affection to Allen Maynard, host of the conference and president of UV RI and also to his wife Wendy and her crew who did a wonderful job of providing food for the attendees.

Church of the Holy Name, Providence

The liturgical activities of the conference will take place at the Church of the Holy Name, established in 1882. The present church building follows the design of the early Roman basilicas dating back to the fourth century when Christian communities grew too large to meet in members' homes. The Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls in Rome, begun by Constantine about 313 A.D., is similar in style to Holy Name. The mosaic floor of the Holy Name vestibule recalls the first churches of Rome, while the Corinthian pilasters, large barreled vaults, and coffered ribs are typical of the late Renaissance or early Baroque.

Fr. Joseph Santos celebrates the traditional Latin Mass here on Sundays at 11 am.

Saturday Morning Mass: Rite of Braga

The low Mass on Saturday, November 19th will be according to the Rite of Braga, celebrated by a priest of the Archdiocese of Braga: Father Joseph Santos. The Rite of Braga was one of the rites permitted by the Council of Trent and dates from the 12th century AD. The Holy Father (then Cardinal Ratzinger) mentioned it in his talk on the Ten Years of the Motu Proprio "Ecclesia Dei" . This is a rare blessing for the conference attendees, to see such an ancient and uncommon liturgy of the Church!
